SO, HOW DID YOU END UP HERE?

We never intended to work in the mission field. For years, we were content serving our local church—giving, tithing, and supporting other missionaries and ministries. It felt good, and it seemed sufficient. As we approached the age where retirement became a consideration, we began reflecting on the next season of life. We had no clear direction but trusted that something would unfold as we remained waiting on the Lord.

One day, an email arrived in our inbox that we would normally ignore. The email introduced different places in the world where one might retire as an expat. One of those places was Belize. Though we didn’t understand why, the idea of Belize sparked something in us. That moment led to a nine-month journey of research. By the end of it, we had fallen in love with a country we had never visited.

Eventually, we decided to see Belize for ourselves. We explored its diverse regions, each with its own beauty, but one place stood out: Caye Caulker. We had planned just a day trip to this small island, but it felt like stepping into a dream. We began looking at properties, but none seemed right.  So, we left without any plans, but knew a lot more about this beautiful country.

Around this time, we were also attending a discipleship program that deepened our understanding of how we could serve Jesus beyond the walls of our local church. Through this process, we began to sense that God was leading us somewhere unexpected.

A pivotal moment came when we were invited to lunch by our church’s global missions director. We almost declined, convinced it would be a conversation about becoming missionaries—something we had no interest in pursuing. But, over lunch everything changed. The plans we thought we had for ourselves faded as we realized that God’s plans were far bigger than we imagined. On the drive home, we looked at each other and said, “This is really happening, isn’t it?” – Causing such tears of joy!

Today, The Haven exists as a place of rest and renewal for our hardworking missionaries and pastors.  It’s a reflection of the journey God has taken us on and a space where others can find peace, recovery, and inspiration to continue their own callings.  We’re honored to welcome those who, like us, are discovering what it means to step into God’s plans—one faithful step at a time.
